I was flattered to yesterday be invited to a meeting to discuss writing a song about my home town, Wickham, in celebration of our church being 900 years old in 2020. The council have some fabulous, very creative ideas, which include putting together a group of singers to perform this song at a series of events in 2020. My role, as it stands at the moment, involves being part of the creation of the song and then directing the choir.
I’m really excited to be part of it and will be looking forward to the project’s progression over the next 18months!
At one point in the conversation we were laughing about how the murky ways of creativity can make a great idea sound absurd at some point. While laughing, Nicky says ‘you’re definitely the person for this job’, which I found both amusing and complimentary.
We discussed various different ways of involving the local community at every stage of the project. We would like our local community to contribute some ideas towards the content of the song, and discussed various online and in person ways we might be able to do that. I had a few thoughts, but any ideas are welcome!
I was really pleased to be asked to be part of this project. I have lived in Wickham since I was 2 years old, aside from my wander-years of globe trotting. I sang my first solo in the church when I was 8 years old, my beloved grandfather’s funeral was there, my dear friend Geoffrey’s ashes are scattered in the garden of remembrance there. I sing at midnight mass there every year with my Mum and remember all the amazing life events that have taken place, just in my lifetime. Imagine how many people have said the same in 900 years.
The church means a lot to me personally and is a formidable landmark in our local community. I think getting together to sing about it is a great idea.
