I was asked to perform at my goddaughter’s christening and I wrote this for her. The original, very personal, recording is much simpler, from my heart to hers, and can be found on the Beautiful Monday album. Since then it has been played, and performed from sheet music, all over the world at Christenings and baby naming ceremonies on every continent, and I have been touched that so many parents and god parents shared my feelings.

When I chose to re-record, I had all of you in mind – all the parents and god parents all around the world who want to protect and care for their children and god children come what may. This came from my little Isobelle, but now it’s for all of us. Enjoy.

lyrics

Shelter From The Storm (for Isobelle)

The first time your Mother heard you laughing
The first time your Daddy saw you cry
Open up your eyes and see the sunshine
We dreamed of all the things you’d every try

And we’ll do our best to shelter you from every storm
Wrap you up and keep you safe and warm
Show you all the love and strength and courage
That arrived the day that you were born

Each time a cloud becomes a castle
Each time you learn something new
Every time your soul is touched with wonder
Our hearts and souls will be touched too

And on those days when the sun won’t shine
We’ll be on our way, put your hand in mine

And we’ll do our best to shelter you from every storm
Wrap you up and keep you safe and warm
Show you all the love and strength and courage
That arrived the day that you were born
