10 Albums in 10 Days. Day 9: Sandi Thom – Smile…It Confuses People
Obviously, “Punk Rocker” is genius. We were all singing it, and as someone who felt she was born as a misplaced 60s child, the lyric ‘I was born to late..’ went straight to my heart. I bought this album and discovered more depth in Sandi’s gorgeous voice and lyrics. She came to town on tour a few years ago, and I was highly amused to hear Sandi talk about the ironic situation of having offended the punk community with her metaphor of ‘flowers in her hair’. It was a great gig, and even though we’d bought front row tickets, the venue had to put out two extra rows of seats, so I wiggled in my chair all night to watch her play. Being a shorty, I’m used to this.
‘Punk Rocker’ was the gateway track to this awesome album (and Sandi’s subsequent work), but ‘What If I’m Right’ is a corker, and ‘Sunset Borderline’ always lifts my spirits. Full of a variety of great songs, I listened to this album on repeat for days when I first had it. Love the artwork too. Thanks Sandi 🌸
