Say Hello Butterfly ..

This new song will be released on 31st August 2017 as the B-Side for ‘First Time’.

I have really enjoyed making this, it’s a simple piano and vocal track about following your dreams. We’ve been making a lot of big production pieces at the moment, which is great fun, but I can never last very long before needing to get back to the basic song, with a story and letting the melody breathe.

I wrote this on the plane on the way to LA this year – I was thinking about the dreams I’d had when I was younger, and the people I meet who have a dream in this life. Also, it always fascinates me that I can fly to another country. Me, a wingless mammal. I know this has been possible for quite some time, but looking down on the clouds will never get old for me!

I actually wrote this on guitar and spent a whole ever in the studio recording the guitar part, and right at the end of the session I just had a little tinkle on the studio keyboard. Straight away I knew it would have to be piano. From the off, I wanted only one harmony instrument and minimal production and instrumentation, so I went back to the project the next day and scrapped the guitar part! It’s all part of the process so I can’t complain. Apart from the piano and vocals, there’s a tiny bit of tambourine and some very simple background vocals – purely because I couldn’t fight them. Backing vocals is one of my favourite things in the recording process, so it stands to reason my imagination would nag me at that point. I hope you enjoy this simple song and find it uplifting.
