We recorded The First Noel in June at the request of one of our licensing agents in tinsel town. It’s called that for a reason. I love Christmas and Christmas music, having grown up singing in choirs from a very young age. Chris and I wanted to put our own twist on it, so firstly we looked at the music, changing it to a more contemporary key, and time signature. I tinkered with some of the chords on the piano to give it a light Beatles vibe, then selected parts of the lyrics from several different verses to focus on on part of the story. Nowadays I feel like lots of us are searching for something, and the imagery of following a star is a beautiful metaphor. We just let the backing vocals build naturally in the studio, and I do love to hear the church bells pealing at Christmas so the end a Capella section was inspired by that.
