I should have called this band A Rose Between Two Legends. This is John. We met on the local music scene and bonded over a general love of vocal harmonies, songwriting and Joni Mitchell. John has inspired thousands of local people to play, sing and enjoy music. Many an enjoyable evening has been spent with John’s long standing band The Crooners, who played all over the south for many years until band member health became more important. John currently composes original music theatre with Greg Mosse, and in recent years had a piece on at the West End in London. John and I first gigged together properly putting on a little homage to Joni in our local arts centre, which became my favourite gig at that time. This picture was taken by Glen Jevon at our first Carole King tribute evening, performing Tapestry from start to finish with added extras either end. This was the first project we worked on together with Chris, and bonded vocally. (Jamie Lowe on drums and Ed Hopkins on keys). John is the early bird in our outfit and has been known to bring back breakfast when we’re away on the road. We take great pleasure in embarrassing him at his tennis club open mic night where the real ale is always excellent. (Ok that’s not fair. Chris is usually driving). John’s incredible creativity, musicality and kindness is overshadowed only by his charming ability to say wonderfully rude things to people and be loved for it. He’s nothing short of a local legend and to know him is to love him. We have missed him more than I can say during lockdown and are thrilled to be working on new material, and planning some little open air gigs together again. This is John. He plays guitar and sings.
